ABSTRACT

Chapter 2, ‘The search for the good’, is concerned with the search for ‘goodness’ and ‘maturity’ in religion and in psychoanalysis. It examines what is meant by ‘growth’ and ‘goodness’ in both discourses. The work of the psychoanalyst Margot Waddell is cited. She suggests that the one is identified with the other in psychoanalysis (to strive to grow is to strive to become good). Two elements necessary to promote ‘growth to goodness’ emerge from her study, and these two facilitators of change are used in the subsequent discussion of early development.
