ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a list of different device form factors as well as their affordances and characteristics for different storytelling settings. It delineates a set of dimensions to better characterize the affordances of different devices. The chapter proposes six dimensions: live presentation capability, perception size, level of immersion, portability, level of isolation, and haptic feedback. Wall displays allow a presenter to give a live presentation to a group of people in a typical conference room setting. Perception size refers to the size of the display relative to the viewer's field of view at the usual viewing distance. Perception size for most devices (including watches, phones, tablets, wall displays, and tabletops) is proportional to the device screen's physical size. New and refined devices introduce opportunities and challenges to the visualization community both for exploration and presentation. Several visualization researchers have called for more efforts on developing visualization and interaction techniques that go beyond the traditional desktop environment.
