ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on some common themes, questions and continuing controversies, while also offering some tentative predictions. Economic models of profit and sustainability that once worked for established media organisations face the unprecedented challenge of necessary cost-cutting as social media disrupt the business models of the twentieth century and create an economic environment which appears to be more unstable than ever before. Broadcast journalism, just as broadcast journalists, has therefore an indispensable role to play in this uncertain future. The challenge will be to tread a fine line between innovation and experimentation on the one hand, and the adherence to sound news values and practices on the other. Without doubt, the wider media landscape has been undergoing, and continues to undergo, profound disruption and change. It was rarely static, as the development of the then 'new' technologies of radio and later television disrupted first the monopoly of print and subsequently the duopoly of print and cinema newsreel.
