ABSTRACT
The climatic changes caused by the emission of greenhouse gases will lead to serious disturbances in the Earth ecosystems and, consequently, to social unrest which could threaten the realization of intergenerational equity, one of the essential paradigms of sustainable development (Cholewa and Pawlowski, 2009; Pawłowski 2008, 2009 a i b, 2013; Udo et. al. 2010, 2011; Mulia et al., 2016; Sztumski, 2016). It should be noted that Lindzen (2016), an outstanding American climatologist, believes that the climatic changes will not be as disastrous as it is being forecast. Nevertheless, it seems that actions aiming at mitigation of greenhouse gases emission should be taken. Although the role of CO2 in generating the greenhouse effect is widely discussed, much smaller attention is drawn to the role of methane. Meanwhile, methane is the second greenhouse gas, which corresponds to 20.7% of the greenhouse effect. The share of CO2 equals 71.6%, whereas nitrous oxide amounts to 6.2% (IPCC-2007; Foster et al. 2007).
