ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to quantify the economic benefits that can be harnessed from the use of the Zambezi’s water resources. It reviews the anticipated economic benefits derived from water use in the Zambezi River Basin, and considers ways to enhance progress toward realising this potential. The chapter describes the historical background and some drivers of water use in the basin. The Zambezi River Basin is endowed with scenic landscapes, natural attractions, spectacular game and wildlife. The most important tourist destinations in the Zambezi River Basin are often related to water resources: Victoria Falls, Lake Nyasa/Malawi, the Kafue Flats, the Luangwa National Park, the Mana Pools, and the Liwonde National Park. Before focusing on the basin’s economic potential that has not been tapped, it should be acknowledged that important development has taken place in the twentieth century – primarily driven by the energy sector.
