ABSTRACT

Trumpet player and composer Randy Brecker, born November 27, 1945, in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, grew up in a musical family along with his brother Michael. Brecker was also influenced by a melting pot of musical styles available to him in Philadelphia, where he was involved with jazz, classical, blues and pop music. After attending Indiana University, Brecker would move to New York City in 1966 where he began working as a studio musician along with the older generation of musicians nearing retirement. By the time his brother Michael arrived in 1969, the Brecker brothers found significant opportunities as the new generation of jazz and pop musicians working within the lucrative recording scene. Brecker's interview reveals his experiences navigating through a career that includes working with Horace Silver, Dreams, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and Jaco Pastorius.
