ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an accessible introduction to law dissertation writing. It focuses on advice from nearly 20 academics who have supervised and examines numerous dissertations and wanted to share their top tips for writing good dissertations with law students. The book aims to tackle the issues that cause anxiety to dissertation students so that law students can focus on the research that they find exciting. Dissertation writing comes with a range of emotions: excitement and enthusiasm, but perhaps also fear and sense of being overwhelmed. If law students are entering the final year of their studies with a clearly formulated, critical research question, wealth of research experience, and outstanding writing skills. Many universities offer classes on methodology or on writing, but the steps that students often find most overwhelming – such as formulating a proposal – are rarely taught in class.
