ABSTRACT

This chapter offers some insights into how to get a first-class mark from law student dissertation. It discusses what to do if a dissertation is about to fail or has failed, and how to rectify common problems. A first-class dissertation contains an original research question; excellent research; and well-presented authoritative findings. If law student goal is to get a first, be open about this with their supervisor and ask for specific advice on how to get there and where they can improve. One of the most common mistakes students make is failing to communicate with their supervisor, leaving the entire feedback process until the final month when it is too late. To get a first, though, law student need to be able to take on board constructive feedback and be willing to amend their work in line with that feedback.
