ABSTRACT
A major focus of this book, the relationship between “communities” and “samples” in terms of abundances, must now be put on a more exact footing by defining both terms, both in theory and in practice. Since randomness plays an important role in the dynamics of communities, as well as in the sampling process, this concept must also be defined, at least empirically, as in the first section.
