ABSTRACT

A family session(s) at the end of co-parenting therapy can be an incredibly healing experience for both parents and children. When children are old enough to be aware of the issues between Mom and Dad, the family session can mark a new beginning with new habits and more security and comfort for the child. This chapter emphasizes the importance of providing a safe place in the session for the children. It talks about emotional connection, and empathizing with their children's feelings and experiences. The purpose of the session is to give the children a voice and an opportunity to establish a deeper emotional connection with both parents in the same room. The chapter utilizes Emotion-Focused Family Therapy skills to focus the family members on creating and reforming emotional bonds, always emphasizing their love for each other. In Emotion-Focused Family Therapy there is a positive focus and everything is interpreted through an attachment lens.
