ABSTRACT

Reputation and credibility are crucial in providing mental health counseling. Far too often clients share stories of frustrating counseling experiences, working with previous therapists who were not helpful and even at times harmful. However, does this mean that if I have not been successful in a marriage, I have no wisdom to share with a couple? Do I lose all credibility to help a couple find the answers to the struggles in their relationship if I was not able to do the same for myself? This chapter shares stories and insight into the wisdom that participants are able to share. Some have experienced questions of credibility while others have felt that their experience provides them with more credibility.
