ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to stimulate the discussion of how mindfulness meditation can help mitigate the impact of the consumer economy, experience of sadness, and powerlessness. By looking at the psychological mechanism derived from the mindfulness practice, the framework of how the mindfulness practice can alleviate the reliance on the coping mechanisms derived from consumption has been proposed. Mindfulness is the element of watchfulness, the lucid awareness of each event that presents itself on the successive occasions of experience. The mindfulness concept was studied by various scholars. The measurements capture the essence of mindfulness, which comprises awareness, attention, and openness to a nonjudgmental acceptance of all the things that we observe both internally and externally. When reflecting on reasons for consumption, despite the fact that consumers like to consume to satisfy their basics needs, consumption is also a tool to cope with various situations.
