ABSTRACT

Fairness means different things to different people, which makes it a moving target for you and your students. Here, we’ll address some of the more common meanings and/or the meanings which we believe are actionable for you and your students. We’ll also explore some strategies you can employ to promote fairness. We have two goals for this entry: 1) to spark your own explicit articulation of what fairness means to you and to your students, and 2) to leaven your thinking about how you promote fairness in your own teaching. We have relied heavily on Robin Tierney’s (2012) chapter, “Fairness in Classroom Assessment,” and we encourage you to read it, too, as a much more thorough and comprehensive treatment of fairness as it relates to classroom assessment.
