ABSTRACT

Exam Day does not mean that learning is now over. In fact, it is possible to provide students with opportunities to continue to learn even after an exam and perhaps to earn additional course credit for doing so. Providing students with the ability to respond to feedback ∗ on written assignments or to try again on exams communicates to them that their learning, and not their grade, is what’s most important. And even if you’re not using an entire system and philosophy like improvement grading, there are techniques and approaches you can employ around assessments to promote learning and mastery. It also draws some of the pressure off of the grading, and lessens students’ evaluation anxiety ∗ and reduces the chances of a grade feeding frenzy ∗ when grades are released.
