ABSTRACT

The architectural profession and practice is under massive pressure from the surrounding world. Societies are in the midst of a series of challenges which architects have to deal with and which influence how work with the built environment: political turbulence, urbanisation, climate change, digital revolution, migration, economic inequalities, etc. Architecture, as a profession and discipline, develops both in practice and the academic environment. These are both sites where knowledge develops and is produced from different perspectives and conditions, and always in relation to the political and economic contexts of society. Architecture is a complex discipline with many facets, and is not based in traditional academic disciplines within the natural and social sciences or humanities, in which education and research to a large extent is conducted through calculating, reading, writing and studying with analytical and discursive means, often at a distance from a professional practice. Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL) was founded in 1986 by Morten Schmidt, Bjarne Hammer and John Lassen.
