ABSTRACT

During the twentieth century, the film industry experienced profound changes as Hispanics and other minority groups rose to prominence and challenged the stagnant Hollywood system. This chapter, based on the documentary The Bronze Screen: 100 Years of the Latino Image in Hollywood Cinema (2002), provides students with a historical account of the negative portrayals of Latinos and other minority groups in Hollywood films. Even though the Civil Rights Movements allowed Latinos to produce their own films and change these negative stereotypes, Latinos and other minority groups continue to battle against misrepresentation and underrepresentation in the film industry in the twenty-first century.
