ABSTRACT
[I left New York on August 30 (our calendar) on the Kaiser Wilhelm 77], a larger and somewhat faster ship than the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. In addition to being luxuriously appointed and providing entertainment, it was equipped with a recently installed device at the bow to sound an alarm if the ship encountered an obstacle. Whether or not this device, which the captain demonstrated for my benefit, has been adopted by other ships I do not know.
