ABSTRACT

Following the demise of the Soviet Union in 1992, there was an upsurge of optimism that the Korean cold war system would also come to an end. In the mid-1990s, however, this anticipation of a Korean endgame has proven to be either premature or inaccurate. While the Korean security system will certainly undergo radical shifts in the long run, the peninsula remains frozen in a state of cold war tension for the time being.
