ABSTRACT

The transition from current industrial modes of agricultural production to more sustainable and regenerative food and fiber systems is one of the key elements in the much larger transition of all societies to sustainability in a post—fossil fuel era. The magnitude of this latter transition ranks with the other great transitions: from hunting and gathering to agricultural to urban civilizations to modern industrial societies. 1 Each of these transitions has involved a basic restructuring of the interactions and relationships between natural systems, social systems, and technological systems, something that dramatically affects both energy and resource use. Also, as in each previous transition, a basic reconceptualization and restructuring of all aspects of society, including food systems, is involved.
