ABSTRACT

The relation between rural land tenure systems and the management and conservation of natural resources has been a topic largely overlooked by students of rural societies. 1 Only very recently have authors begun to examine these nexuses (Thiesenhusen 1991; Alcorn and Toledo 1995a and 1995b; Kaimowitz 1995). This chapter evaluates the potential ecological consequences of the Mexican land tenure system as established by the new agrarian law of 1992. This chapter is based on previous contributions of the author on this subject (Toledo 1993, 1994, and 1995b) and on new reflections and data.
