ABSTRACT
The military orientation of American government that began with the cold war is a completely new development in the history of the United States. Though missionary zeal had manifested itself throughout the nation's history in countless military interventions, the military nevertheless had led a marginal existence within the society in peacetime. With the cold war, this military influence became established as a permanent and prominent part of government.
