ABSTRACT
The war within the garment workers union between the Communists and the noncommunists (mainly Socialists and anarchists) was no small spat between quarrelsome sectarians. Before it was finished, it involved thousands of garment workers in bare-knuckled and brass-knuckled street combat, New York’s Governor Alfred Smith, Soviet agents dispatched from Moscow, and top figures in the American underworld.
