ABSTRACT
In historical terms, Russian Jewry is a recent phenomenon, dating only from the end of the eighteenth century. Prior to that time, no Jews were allowed to live in Russia. The few who did had to convert to Russian Orthodoxy. The most famous among them, Piotr Shafirov, was an adviser to Peter the Great in the early 1700s.
