ABSTRACT

After two centuries of struggle to obtain equal rights, do women participate in politics at rates equal to men? To what extent do women's gender role orientations influence their patterns of political participation? To answer these questions this chapter first considers women's and men's patterns of political participation, then compares participation patterns among women on the basis of their gender role orientations. Lastly, it examines the impact of citizens' gender role orientations, beliefs and attitudes, political orientations, and the social context of their lives on their patterns of political participation.
