ABSTRACT

International and regional relationships in Asia are undergoing significant changes in the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001. There has been a noteworthy focus on the Abu Sayyaf Group in the southern Philippines, the terrorist bombing in Bali, Indonesia, the arrests of terror suspects in Malaysia and Singapore, and the changing relationship between India and Pakistan in light of the removal of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. What should not be overlooked about changes in Asia after 9/11 are the continuing political, economic, military, and social developments in China (officially, the People's Republic of China or PRC) and, perhaps more importantly, ongoing and perhaps historic changes in Sino-American relations.
