ABSTRACT

Russian society is highly diverse. Any study of social capital and social cohesion in Russia must acknowledge that their quality and scope will vary significantly across eleven time zones. This chapter disaggregates the study of social capital in Russia at the regional level, asking the following questions: Which Russian regions possess the “most” social capital? Which have the least? How do these measurements vary over time? Why do these spatial and temporal differentials exist? And, perhaps most importantly, how are they significant?
