ABSTRACT
After the adoption in 1990 of the Soviet law on the mass information media, the legal operation of private media outlets, functioning outside the Soviet propaganda system, was permitted for the first time. The most important new organs were the radio station Ekho Moskvy, the newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta (NG), the weekly Kommersant, and the magazine Stolitsa.
