TheessaysinthisvolumedescribetheinstitutionalizationofChineseleadership politicsfromtheerasofMaoZedongandDengXiaopingtotheeraofJiang Zemin.Theauthors,whiledifferingonmanypoints,agreethatduringthefirst fourdecadesofPartyrule,informalstatusandrelationships,muchmorethan formalinstitutionalrolesandrules,shapedthebehaviourofthetopnational leadersinChina.InLowellDittmer'swords,informalpoliticshavebeen "historicallydominant",withformalpolitics"nomorethanafacade"(p.19).
