ABSTRACT
The shift of global economic power towards East Asia has been striking. In 1960 the region accounted for only four percent of the world GDP; by 1995 it accounted for a quarter. This shift is expected to continue, though more slowly because large regions like China (population 1.3 billion) and Southeast Asia (population 500 million) are still in the early stages of industrialization.
