ABSTRACT

The Asia-Pacific region suffers from a range of development-induced environmental stress and resource demands. Growing water scarcity, land degradation, and its attendant problem of food scarcity, migration, and public health are foremost among them. Increasing demand for energy across Northeast Asia has enormous implications for the region’s ability to cope with acid rain, other trans-boundary air pollutants, and issues such as nuclear waste storage. Moreover, there are the dire prospects of continued population growth—especially in China, where infrastructure to meet basic environmental, energy, and sanitation needs lags.
