ABSTRACT
This chapter treats higher education primarily as an investment, the pivotal perspective for most students and their parents. The discussion focuses on costs and gains, giving some insight into those academic programs of study that are likely to pay the highest returns. All along the way, however, there is this caveat: no one can accurately predict a given person’s gains—financial or otherwise—from higher education. Our focus must rest on the averages.
