ABSTRACT

The bača had a dog, Bodrík, 1 that had tended his sheep watchfully for years, at night as in the daytime, so that a wolf couldn't even approach the fold. But what good was that, when old Bodrík had already gone lame and hadn't a single tooth left? "An old dog is only good for the trash heap," said the bača. "Why feed the old cur when he's not up to it anymore?" Instead they fed a young pup, petted him, and sent him out to the fold.
