ABSTRACT

Once there were two brothers. Though they were of the same father and the same mother, their relationship did not look like it does between brothers. The older one was miserly and stingy, and therefore also rich, while the younger one was poor, but no one in the village could match him for honesty. More than once the younger one went to his rich older brother to beg for help, for need often oppressed him so that he had naught to place in his mouth. He didn't ask much, just begged, for God's sake, for a bite to eat. But the rich one, as if he were not even his brother, took offense at him and said, "You think I'm going to take care of such sluggards here?" and pushed him out.
