ABSTRACT

College students should at least be helped to see how incredible it is that politicians can get away with cutting a deficit by proposals to cut the safety net budget while keeping safe and even increasing a military budget that was bloated by a cold war that has ended against a Warsaw Pact that cannot be revived. Even the Center for Defense Information has shown that the military budget could be safely cut to about $100 billion. A reformed and extended social security system could readily be afforded if a small part of the bloat in the military budget was all that was sacrificed. When will we talk sense in terms of the possible gains in economic security that we are now giving up to keep an inexcusably large military establishment? Let's get our textbooks down to facing the big issues that daily affect people's real security.
