ABSTRACT

TheMatterofMiddleKnowledge Aswasnotedinthelastchapter,middleknowledgereferstotwo differentkindsofconditionalpropositions.Thefirstofthese,what aresometimescalledcounterfactualsoffreedom,arestatements aboutwhatafreebeingwouldhavedonehadconditionsbeenother thantheywere.Thoughtheterminologymaysoundabitalien,we assertcounterfactualsoffreedomallthetime.ItisacceptedpoliticalwisdomthesedaysthatifPresidentClintonhadadmittedhis affairwithMonicaLewinskyfromthebeginning,thentheHouse ofRepresentativeswouldneverhavevotedtoimpeachhim.This isacounterfactualoffreedominthatitmakesaclaimaboutwhat freebeings--themembersoftheHouseofRepresentativesinthis case-wouldhavechosentodohadthefactsbeenotherthan (counterto)whattheyactuallywere.
