ABSTRACT

The eight case studies contained in this book are among some of the first detailed looks into the relationship of reform and provincial leadership in China. As a result, they have raised as many questions as they have provided answers. Still, what emerged from these studies is a new level of appreciation of the dynamics behind the momentous reform movement since the late 1970s. In particular, this study helps us understand how and why the provincial leaders shaped the course of local reform and development. The goal of this chapter is to compare the findings of the preceding chapters in the context of the changing politics in China.
