ABSTRACT
Thisvolumeiscomprisedofacollectionoffieldreportsontheurbanization ofruralareasinGuangdong,FujianandYunnanprovincesinsouthern China,plusreportsfromTibetinthewestandLiaoninginthenortheast.All ofthesereports,saveforthatonLiaoning,werepartofajointeffortofa teamofChinesescholarsand,intermittently,theAmericaneditorofthis volume.ProfessorZhouDarningofZhongshanUniversitywasProjectCoDirectoralongwithProfessorGuldinofPacificLutheranUniversity.The fieldresearchforthesechapters,fundedbytheWenner-GrenFoundation forAnthropologicalResearchandtheUnitedBoardforChristianHigher EducationinAsia,wasconductedbetweenspring1992andfall1993,with eachfieldstaylastingfromonetoseveralweeks,andsomesitesvisitedat leasttwice.TheLiaoningfieldstudy,althoughitfollowedthesameresearchguidelinesasdevisedfortherestoftheproject,wasconductedwith separatefundingandundertakeninearly1996.
