ABSTRACT

II. SOME COMMUNITIES OF CENTRAL AND EASTERN ZARIA PROVINCE

{Kurama, Sheni, the hill peoples of Lere and Kauru Districts, and tribes of the Katab Group)

The pagan communities of central and eastern Zaria Province fall into two major segments, one of which must be neglected here-though it is related to the other in various ways-for the reason that its closest links are with the peoples of the High Plateau to the east.1 The segment to be treated here emerges as a kind of unit when posed against its neighbours, but is most closely affiliated with the Butawa of Kano and Ningi, showing also, as do the Butawa, certain noteworthy correspondences to the distant peoples of the Middle Niger.
