ABSTRACT

When we are considering the influences upon the plays here edited,

two elements, both medieval in their immediate origins, come to mind. The

stronger influence is the allegory, which enjoyed a resurgence in popularity

on the university stage during the Jacobean and Caroline periods . In ac-

England, though the relative proportion of allegorical plays did seem to

that in the early Stuart years allegorical plays grew immensely in popularity

cale, which is significant for our present consideration, established the

academic taste for allegory. This play seems to have enjoyed a considerable

measure of popularity and influence, and we will be looking more closely at

this piece when we examine the academic grammar plays.
