ABSTRACT

A school leader's involvement in planning and implementing curriculum, instruction, and assessment results in greater student learning gains. Local curriculum is strongly shaped by standards that detail what students should know and be able to do at end of each grade. School leaders should emphasize content knowledge within the standards. The core of knowledge should exist within academic standards and be foundation for articulated curriculum of deeper learning. Rotating faculty and parent meetings among different departments and classrooms highlights content learning. All teachers can host meetings in their instructional spaces and spotlight data, curriculum, and best practices. Supplementary materials, aligned to textbooks, allow students to continue to make linkages among concepts and skills and heighten learning. Student online workspaces provide digital versions of textbooks and supplementary materials. Lesson planning requires teachers to bring the right mix of curriculum, instruction, and assessment for students. School leaders should promote simple instructional routines that can be easily adapted and implemented across content areas.
