ABSTRACT

The people known as Tikar number about 170,000 and form the largest ethnic group in Bamenda Province of the British Cameroons. A further 10,500 live in adjacent districts of the French Cameroons, mostly along the Mbam and Kim river valleys. Their neighbours are : to the north-west and north, the peoples of Benue Province in Nigeria, the Mbembe group1 in Bamenda, and the Mambila of Adamawa Province; to the east, the Fulani, Wute, and Bamum in the French Cameroons; to the south-east, the Bamileke, also in the French Cameroons; and to the south-west and west, the Bali, Widekum, and Aghem groups in Bamenda.
