ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Early Childhood Education and Care for Sustainability (ECECfS). It focuses on the policy and practice within ECEC, how it has changed and what the challenges are for teachers in their everyday life with young children. The chapter also focuses on what Ban Ki-Moon talks about as global citizenship, and how ECEC can contribute to this. That the ECEC sector was slow in embracing sustainability issues can be explained by several factors. Organisation Mondiale pour L‘Education Prescolaire is an international, non-governmental and non-profit organisation, involving both practitioners and researchers, with a focus on all aspects of ECEC. Several studies have focused on teachers' and practitioners' perceptions of education for sustainable development (ESD) in ECEC. ESD is expanding in ECEC in both countries, but culture is strong in both the teachers' perceptions and what they say they can do with children.
