ABSTRACT
From this time onwards there was rivalry between the Dagomba and the Gonja, until the latter were decisively beaten by the Dagomba soon after 1720, according to W a r d . (2) At the end of the 18th century both states were attacked by Ashanti, the latest and most powerful of the Akan king doms. Gonja was subjugated, and the Dagomba were made to pay an annual tribute of slaves to Ashanti, a tribute which did not cease until 1874, when the Ya-Na Abudulai refused to continue paying it.
