ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the history of scholarship in distance education. It is organized into seven topics: pioneer research; emergence of research centers; trends in the late 20th century; professional development of distance educators; professional associations; lectures, seminars, symposia, workshops, and conferences; and publications and other media.
