ABSTRACT
This chapter presents historical background and a literature review on leadership in distance education. The author believes that higher education has entered a more accelerated phase, and that the resulting changes demand compatible leadership styles, including approaches that have not typically characterized how educational enterprises function. The information presented in this chapter reinforces the argument that greater attention must be paid to leadership as a discrete area of study in order to achieve the goals presented by future challenges.
