ABSTRACT

Introduction Tokyo was announced as the host of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games (hereinafter, Olympics or Olympic Games) in September 2013 in Buenos Aires. At that time, a Japanese 2020 Olympic delegation member explained that “omotenashi”, the spirit of Japanese hospitality,1 was the traditional Japanese way in which Tokyo would welcome foreigners. However, as the 2020 Olympics gets closer, the current situation in Japan has cast doubt on the feasibility of delivering omotenashi for a sustainable Olympics.2
