ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of power in structuring conflict interaction. It defines power as a function of relationships between parties rather than a possession of an individual. Forms of power in terms of surface and ideological processes are distinguished. It discusses the constitution of power as it is effected through social categorization, the mystique of power, direct interaction, and the acceptance of legitimate authority. The use of power in conflict tactics is illustrated in analysis of threats and promises, relational control, and issue control. The balancing of power in conflicts, along with benefits and challenges of unequal power situations is discussed. The chapter closes with a discussion of how to manage power constructively in conflict interaction.
