ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the use of augmented reality (AR) in education, introduce a theoretical foundation and address the challenges and barriers associated with AR's large-scale implementation and wider institutional acceptance. It also discusses research and application of AR in education, and state the case for the inclusion of these technologies as an integral approach for education. AR enables the 'ubiquitous computing' model and engaging anytime anywhere mobile learning. The three major themes of social development theory describe how AR can support learning. Social interaction, the more knowledgeable other and the zone of proximal Development are the foundations of social development theory that provide the framework for using AR in education. In addition, AR can support immersive learning. Immersive learning has been used to digitally share content in virtual and modified worlds. This technology benefits from being based on code used for games like second life. AR is also aligned with connectivism.
