ABSTRACT

The focus of the Homework Review in this session should be on identifying sources of friends and social activities. This may not be an issue for some young adults that already have social activities with accepting peers; for others, this assignment may be a struggle. Plan to spend considerable time during the Homework Review on helping social coaches identify appropriate social activities for their young adults. Avoid passing out lists of possible social activities as these lists tend to be outdated before you know it and may not be appropriate for each young adult. More importantly, by giving social coaches a list of possible social activities, you fail to teach them and their young adults how to do this independently. Ultimately, your goal is to help group members become as self-sufficient as possible, so they can support one another once the group has come to an end. Handing them a list of possible sources of friends is contrary to that goal. Having said that, if you see a young adult struggling to find a source of friends, and you or other group members have some good ideas, feel free to share them as appropriate. The latter form of help, which includes offering additional suggestions, is quite different than providing lists of social activities, which might give the impression that you are responsible for finding the source of friends.
