ABSTRACT

The focus of this lesson is on appropriate use of humor. While this lesson will not be critical to all of the young adults you will be working with, there is a certain subset that require instruction in this area. These are the young adults that are constantly cracking jokes and trying to be funny. Unfortunately, for many of them, no one else is laughing-or if others are laughing, they may be laughing AT them rather than laughing WITH them. Perhaps due to deficits in social cognition and perspective taking, many young adults with social challenges are unaware of their humor feedback and may be pushing people away in their quest to be funny. They often do this because they know how captivating and alluring humor can be. The reality is that when used appropriately, humor is intoxicating and magnetic. People often want to be around other people that are funny and make them laugh. However, when used inappropriately, humor is one of the fastest ways to push people away.
